Well the installation finished and took roundabout an hour. I played around a bit to see what’s going on. It immediately picked up 192 updates that needed to be installed, this was automatically downloaded from the internet and installed.
The add/remove programs feature works in another way, there is preset programs ready to be installed. They came with Ubuntu but you need to be connected to the internet to install them, it looks like it actually has to download them. There is loads of software, anything you need. I found the function very handy since you don’t have to worry about your software on CDs, it’s always there whenever you install Ubuntu.
Another great thing is the driver support, omg, it picked up and installed all the drivers for all of the devices on my laptop, sound, vga, lan etc. without any problems, what other operating system can do that.
Connecting to a Microsoft network share for example is quick and easy. You just need the ip address of the server or machine and the sharename you’re connecting to. You can’t run any exe’s or programs though because Ubuntu is Linux based.

There’s still lots of playing around to do so I will add another article in the future when I’m all clued up with Ubuntu.

The Ubuntu installation is pretty standard with some extra settings to help you. You boot of the CD like you would usually do with any OS. If you have Windows XP already installed on your machine, the Ubuntu installer can modify and resize your whole harddrive to create an extra partition so that you can keep your Windows installation and do a dual boot with Ubuntu. During this process you can even import your Windows XP user accounts so that your documents and settings are available in Ubuntu. The installation is straight forward with no problems. So far so good. :-)

My one friend showed me Ubuntu in action yesterday and hell…….. it looks great, so many features. You have a virtual 3D desktop in which you can switch between different running desktops. There are so many little things that for example the other major OS don’t have. It is so custumizable, I’m very impressed with Ubuntu. You can choose between a desktop version and a server version.
Ubuntu is a free, Debian derived Linux-based operating system, available with both community and professional support. This OS is free of charge and will always be. You get free security updates for at least 18 months on the desktop and server version.
You can download Ubuntu from their website for free and you can even request a CD/DVD to be sent to you via postage. That is also totally free.
Check out their website: http://www.ubuntu.com
Well, my Ubuntu download has finished, I’m going to install it now and play around a bit. Will get back to you guys.

We have moved our blog from a subfolder to a subdomain. Since our Blog is still pretty young it wont really influence the search engine rankings. We did this because with a subdomain we can more easily see who links to our blog and also see the PR. Our Blog will now be indexed as it’s own site and wont fall under the main Definite Web Hosting site. We also added a forward from the old URL to point to the new URL which is the subdomain, therefore we wont loose any of the current links to our Blog.

Website statistics are very important when you need to publish your website. There’s very handy tools to check your webstats. When you’re running cPanel you get utilities like these: AWStats, Webalizer, Raw Log Manager, Referrer Logs, Error Logs.
With these you can see how many bandwitdh are transferred every day and how much space you’re website is using, therefore monitoring if your webhosting package is sufficient for your needs. You can also see how much unique visitors you get every day and how many hits which of your webpages get. It also shows from which countries your visitors are and how many pages they accessed and for how long. IP addresses are shown and you can track your visitors with that information. Awstats shows you which search engines are accessing your websites and how many pages thay have downloaded. These are all very important when you are trying to get your websites noticed. You can work with this information for better marketing. It shows you how often google and other search engines access your site. I prefer Awstats, it’s all this info on one page and it helps a lot.

It really depends on your needs.

Our Basic Package is suitable for people who wants to publish a site which doesn’t require a lot of disk space and bandwidth. You can use this package if you need to publish your CV or a small info site.
The Standard Package will be enough for a small company website which does not contain too much data or databases. It’s also suitable if you want to publish wedding or holiday photos that does require a bit more disk space and bandwidth than our Basic Package.
Medium companies can make use of our Business Package, it includes more than enough disk space for all your web pages and databases. The bandwidth will be enough for loads of visits to the site and will also accommodate mail traffic for quit a few mail accounts.
If you have a very bandwidth hungry site, our Business Pro Package will do the job. There’s enough disk space and bandwidth for a large company.

We have custom packages available on request.

No problem, its easy, and can be done without having any downtime for your site at all. What you would want to do is first set up an account with us. We’ll set up the account then mail you a welcome letter after you sign up.
You can then upload your files, using the IP address to get it all working, set up email addresses, etc. Then, when its all 100% ready, you can change the DNS name server info for your domain to the ones for our hosting service (they are mentioned in your welcome letter) and then in 24-72 hours your domain should switch over and start working on our servers.

No. You don’t need to sign anything. Your hosting account will be active for as long as you pay the monthly hosting fee. If for some reason you decide not to host with us anymore, just send us an e-mail and we will terminate your account.
